Diesel-Electric locomotives have proven their efficiency for over 80 years. Diesel-Electric propulsion is used in military and research ships, but is somewhat unique in the yachting world. Removing the engines from the prop shafts has the benefit that the engines can run at optimum efficiency. Prop speed is regulated by variable-speed electric motors. This increases engine life and lowers fuel consumption. The added benefit is that by removing the marine gears and prop shafts from the engines, you get much quieter propulsion.
